Crawling gathers information. Conversely, a page can’t be indexed without first being crawled – there’s no other way to know it exists. A website can be crawled and not indexed, meaning the search engine has seen it but decided it doesn’t merit a spot in its library. The crawl is the journey, while the index is the destination. A crawler is like a curious tourist wandering through a new city, snapping photos and jotting down notes about interesting buildings. The other is about order, logic, and storage.
This happens through a meta robots tag or an X-Robots-Tag header. Then we need to look at the invisible barriers your page might be wearing. A frequent culprit is accidentally telling search engines to stay away. You might have added a “noindex” rule for a draft and forgotten to remove it, or a plugin might have inserted it without your knowledge. A quick check of your page’s source code will reveal if “noindex” is lurking in the HTML. But what if you requested indexing and still see nothing?
If it is, remove that instruction, and you’ll be back on track. The same goes for robots.txt rules that might accidentally shield your content from being discovered.Check both settings now; it may prevent a frustrating diagnosis later. Before you get too excited, though, make sure your page actually deserves the visit. Before getting excited, confirm that search engines can actually reach the page. A quick indexing tool scan of your settings can save you a lot of head-scratching later. Check that it isn’t blocked by a noindex tag buried in the code, which politely tells search engines to stay away.A hidden noindex tag in the code tells them not to include it, while an overly restrictive robots.txt file can keep the content from being found at all.
Let’s also talk about site structure. An XML sitemap is essentially a guest list that tells Google which pages to visit and when. Ensure your new page is listed there and that the sitemap is submitted in Search Console. This is like handing the valet your keys directly. A clean sitemap is another powerful ally. Aim for a flat architecture where your most crucial pages are reachable in one or two clicks from the homepage. If your website has an unusually deep hierarchy, meaning a page is buried under many clicks, search engines may deprioritize it.
There are a few ways to verify if your content is indexed. You can use the Google Search Console, which is a tool that helps you manage your website’s visibility in search results.
